After remaining largely silent during the NEET controversy, Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha has finally explained why he chose not to speak publicly earlier. Addressing Parliament, Chadha said his priority was never to gain media attention but to ensure that meaningful changes were made to the examination system.
Speaking during the debate on the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, Chadha said that his responsibilities had changed over time. According to him, his earlier role in the Opposition was to raise issues, but his current responsibility is to contribute towards solving them.
“I never wanted to speak just to make headlines or mark my attendance in front of cameras. I had promised myself that I would speak only when we were in a position to bring a solution and when the system was actually being fixed,” Chadha said in Parliament.
He described the passage of the anti-paper leak legislation as a significant step towards restoring students’ trust in the country’s examination system. Chadha also praised the government’s efforts to strengthen laws against exam malpractices, saying that stricter penalties and structural reforms were necessary to protect the future of students.
The remarks come after months of criticism over his silence during the NEET paper leak controversy, which sparked nationwide protests by students and political parties. Chadha maintained that his focus had always been on achieving results rather than making public statements.
His statement has reignited political discussions, with supporters calling it a practical approach focused on solutions, while critics continue to question why he did not speak out earlier during the peak of the controversy.
