New Delhi: At least six people have died after a multi-storey building being used as student accommodation collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area, triggering a large-scale search and rescue operation.
The incident took place on Sunday afternoon in the densely populated locality near Delhi University’s South Campus. The building, reportedly around five storeys high, housed students in a paying guest or hostel facility. Rescue personnel have been working through the debris to locate anyone who may still be trapped.
Rescue Teams Race Against Time
Multiple emergency agencies have been deployed at the site, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Police and other response teams.
Officials have been using specialised equipment to clear the rubble and search for survivors. At least 11 people have been rescued so far, according to reports, while several others were feared trapped during the initial stages of the operation.
The rescue effort has been particularly challenging because of the amount of concrete and debris at the site and the narrow lanes surrounding the building.
Building Was Under Repair
Preliminary information from officials indicates that the structure was several decades old and repair or construction work was underway when it collapsed.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the site after the incident and said those found responsible would face action. Authorities are investigating whether construction activity, structural weaknesses or other factors contributed to the collapse.
The exact cause of the collapse has not yet been officially established.
Students Among Those Affected
The building was being used to accommodate students, making the incident particularly distressing for families and the local student community.
Several victims were taken to hospitals for treatment. AIIMS Trauma Centre received injured people following the collapse, with some reported to be in critical condition.
The incident also prompted concerns over the safety of student accommodation and older buildings in densely populated parts of Delhi.

The collapse has once again raised questions about structural safety, unauthorised construction and the monitoring of older buildings in the national capital.
Satya Niketan has emerged as a major student accommodation hub because of its proximity to educational institutions. The concentration of paying guest facilities and hostels in congested neighbourhoods makes regular structural inspections and compliance with safety norms particularly important.
Authorities are now examining the building’s construction history, its structural condition and the work being carried out before the collapse.

Officials are continuing the search operation while investigating the circumstances that led to the building’s failure.
