A daring proposal atop one of the world’s most iconic skyscrapers has turned into one of the biggest viral stories of the year. Russian rooftopping couple Angelina Nikolau and Ivan Kuznetsov are making headlines worldwide after climbing New York City’s Empire State Building, getting engaged more than 1,300 feet above the ground, being arrested, and then sharing a passionate kiss after their release from court.
According to reports, the incident unfolded on the morning of July 2 when authorities received information about a possible security breach at the Empire State Building. Soon afterwards, surveillance images reportedly showed two people standing on the building’s antenna, an area that is strictly off-limits to the public.
Officials said the pair allegedly entered restricted sections of the building overnight, damaged a secured door and climbed to the antenna, which rises more than 1,300 feet above Manhattan. To ensure their safety, authorities temporarily shut down the building’s broadcast antenna before officers from the NYPD Emergency Service Unit brought them down safely.
But before they were taken into custody, the couple created a moment that quickly went viral across the world.
They unfurled a banner carrying the message, “When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace.” Moments later, Ivan Kuznetsov went down on one knee and proposed to Angelina Nikolau at the top of the skyscraper. The breathtaking proposal, captured on video and photographs, spread rapidly across social media and international news platforms.
Following the stunt, prosecutors charged the couple with multiple offences, including reckless endangerment, burglary and criminal mischief. According to court documents, the damaged security lock is expected to cost around $2,000 to repair.
During court proceedings, prosecutors said Kuznetsov told investigators that he simply wanted to do “something special” for their engagement. Since the charges are not eligible for bail, a Manhattan judge granted the couple supervised release while the criminal case continues. They are scheduled to return to court on August 24.
The story did not end outside the courtroom.
As the couple walked out of the Manhattan courthouse holding hands, they stopped to embrace and shared a long kiss in front of waiting photographers and television cameras. The emotional moment instantly went viral, adding another dramatic chapter to their already extraordinary story.
Speaking briefly to reporters, the couple declined to discuss how they reached the top of the Empire State Building. They said they wanted to rest after spending the night in police custody. Angelina also revealed that her engagement ring remained at the police precinct following their arrest.
Angelina Nikolau and Ivan Kuznetsov are well known in the world of “rooftopping”—the dangerous practice of illegally climbing skyscrapers, bridges and towers without safety equipment. Over the years, they have scaled some of the world’s tallest structures, documenting their adventures for millions of followers across social media.
Their fearless climbs inspired the 2024 documentary “Skywalkers: A Love Story,” which explored both their extreme lifestyle and their relationship.
While many online users have praised the proposal as a spectacular romantic gesture, authorities maintain that the stunt endangered lives and compromised the security of one of New York City’s most famous landmarks.
As the legal proceedings continue, the couple’s breathtaking climb, sky-high engagement and viral kiss have ensured that their story remains one of the most talked-about incidents on social media this year.
