Call of Duty Co-Creator Vince Zampella Dies in Fiery Ferrari Crash in California

Veteran video game developer Vince Zampella, best known as a co-creator of the Call of Duty franchise, was killed in a tragic car crash in Southern California on Sunday afternoon. A passenger travelling with him also died, authorities confirmed.

Zampella was the former CEO of Infinity Ward and the current head of Respawn Entertainment, a studio owned by Electronic Arts (EA). He was widely respected as one of the most influential figures in modern video gaming.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the single-vehicle crash occurred around 12:45 pm on Angeles Crest Highway, a scenic but winding road in the San Gabriel Mountains north of Los Angeles. The southbound Ferrari had just exited a tunnel when it veered off the road, slammed into a concrete barrier and caught fire.

Zampella, who was driving the car, became trapped in the burning vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger was ejected during the crash and later died at a hospital. The identity of the passenger has not yet been released.

Authorities said the cause of the crash remains under investigation. A witness shared video footage with investigators showing a red 2026 Ferrari 296 GTS striking the barrier moments after exiting the tunnel. The high-performance sports car is capable of more than 800 horsepower.

Zampella: A Giant in the Gaming World

Zampella, 55, co-founded Respawn Entertainment in 2010. The studio quickly earned acclaim for games such as Titanfall, Titanfall 2, Apex Legends, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. EA acquired Respawn in 2017, with Zampella continuing to lead the studio.

He also oversaw an EA studio team in Playa Vista responsible for the long-running Battlefield franchise, further cementing his influence across multiple blockbuster gaming titles.

Washington Post video game critic Gene Park described Zampella as a creator who understood storytelling at a deeply human level, calling him humble, thoughtful and fully aware of the impact his work had on players worldwide.

Industry Mourns a Visionary

In a statement, EA called Zampella’s death “an unimaginable loss,” describing his influence on gaming as “profound and far-reaching.”

“His work helped shape modern interactive entertainment and inspired millions of players and developers around the world,” the company said.

EA and Respawn Entertainment have both reached out to Zampella’s family, who have not yet issued a public statement.

With his passing, the global gaming community has lost a visionary whose work defined an era—and whose legacy will continue to influence games for generations to come.
