Ashraful Retains Role as Bangladesh Batting Coach Ahead of T20 World Cup

Former Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful will remain the national side’s batting coach, after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) decided to extend his tenure. Initially appointed for the home series against Ireland, Ashraful has now been confirmed to continue in the role going forward.

BCB’s cricket-operations chairman confirmed the decision, saying although Ashraful is a new face in coaching, he has already shown promise and a genuine interest in the job. “He has potential, and he is learning fast,” he added.

Ashraful is expected to lead the batting unit for the upcoming T20 World Cup. If the team’s performance aligns with expectations, his tenure could be extended through to the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Meanwhile, former senior assistant coach Mohammad Salahuddin will also stay on, after his earlier resignation was rejected by the board following internal discussions.

Ashraful’s journey from national captain — once criticised for off-field controversies — to coach has been surprising. He previously served as batting coach in domestic leagues such as the Global Super League, and now returns to the national dressing room with renewed responsibility.

With his deep experience as a former top-order batter and mentor, the BCB appears willing to give Ashraful a long-term opportunity to shape Bangladesh’s batting for the future.
