IPL cricketer Abishek Porel Arrested in Bengal Over Rape and Criminal Intimidation Case

Delhi Capitals cricketer Abishek Porel has been arrested in connection with a criminal case involving allegations of rape, criminal intimidation and assault. The arrest was carried out by police at Emami City under the Dum Dum police station, according to Hooghly Rural Police SP Kunwar Bhushan Singh.

The case stems from a complaint filed by a medical student in June. The woman alleged that she had been in a relationship with Porel for around three years and accused him of having sexual relations with her on the promise of marriage. She further alleged that he later refused to marry her and subjected her to assault and criminal intimidation.

According to the complaint, the woman also alleged that Porel confined her, isolated her and denied her food, leaving her physically weak and requiring medical attention. These allegations form part of the FIR registered against the cricketer.

The Calcutta High Court had earlier directed the immediate arrest of Porel and another accused in connection with the case. The court’s order followed the complaint lodged by the woman and her mother at Mogra Police Station in Hooghly district.

Porel has denied the allegations and previously described them as false. He had said that he would respond in detail after the police completed their initial inquiry.

Porel, a left-handed top-order batter, has represented Delhi Capitals in the IPL since 2023. He made 108 runs in four innings for the franchise in the previous season. He made his first-class debut for Bengal during the 2021-22 season and has also represented India A on tours of the UK and Australia.

The allegations against Porel are subject to investigation and legal proceedings, and an arrest does not by itself establish guilt.
