India’s 80th Independence Day celebrations on August 15, 2026, will witness a historic change as Vande Mataram will be sung from the ramparts of the Red Fort for the first time.
The national song will be performed before the Prime Minister hoists the national flag and delivers the Independence Day address. The move comes as the country marks 150 years of Vande Mataram, which has played an important role in India’s freedom struggle.
Vande Mataram to Be Part of Red Fort Ceremony
Every year on August 15, the Prime Minister hoists the national flag at the Red Fort and addresses the nation. This year, however, the traditional ceremony will include a significant addition.
According to the Defence Ministry, Vande Mataram will be sung after the Prime Minister arrives at the Red Fort and before the flag-hoisting ceremony. The national anthem will follow the flag hoisting.
Those attending the ceremony will also be expected to stand during the rendition.
Why Is Vande Mataram Significant?
Written by renowned Bengali writer and poet Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, Vande Mataram was first published in his novel Anandamath.
The song became an important symbol of India’s freedom movement and inspired generations of Indians during the struggle against British rule.
The Constituent Assembly adopted Vande Mataram as India’s National Song on January 24, 1950, while Jana Gana Mana was adopted as the national anthem.
150 Years of Vande Mataram
The year 2026 marks 150 years of Vande Mataram, making its inclusion in the Independence Day ceremony particularly significant.
The government has been organising events across the country to commemorate the milestone and highlight the song’s historical contribution to India’s freedom movement.
Its first formal rendition from the Red Fort is therefore expected to be one of the key highlights of this year’s Independence Day celebrations.
Youth Power to Take Centre Stage
The 2026 Independence Day celebrations will also focus on the role of India’s youth in the country’s development.
The theme for this year’s celebrations is “Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat@2047”, highlighting the contribution of young Indians towards the goal of building a developed India by 2047.
A large number of guests, students and other invitees are expected to attend the celebrations at the historic Red Fort.
