New Delhi: In a significant step aimed at protecting the integrity of the upcoming NEET-UG re-examination, the Central government has imposed temporary restrictions on the messaging platform Telegram.
The move comes amid concerns that the app was being used to spread misleading information, fake question papers, and exam-related scams targeting medical aspirants.
The restrictions will remain in place until June 22, shortly after the NEET re-test scheduled for June 21.
Authorities believe the measure will help curb the circulation of false claims and prevent organised cheating networks from exploiting students during a crucial examination period.
The National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts NEET, has welcomed the government’s decision, stating that safeguarding students from misinformation is essential to ensuring a fair and transparent examination process.
The agency has repeatedly urged candidates to rely only on official communication channels for updates related to the exam.
Officials reportedly found that several groups on the platform were circulating unverified claims about leaked question papers and offering fraudulent access to exam materials.
Investigations by cybercrime agencies and law enforcement bodies prompted stronger action ahead of the re-exam.
The government has maintained that the temporary restriction is a preventive measure designed to protect candidates and preserve the credibility of one of India’s most important entrance examinations. Meanwhile, students have been advised to stay alert, avoid rumours, and report suspicious content through official channels.
