52 Indian Institutions Feature in QS Rankings 2027, IIT Delhi Emerges on Top

India’s higher education sector has received a significant boost in the latest QS World University Rankings 2027, with IIT Delhi emerging as the country’s highest-ranked institution. The institute secured the 118th position globally, improving by five places from its 123rd rank last year and matching the highest-ever position achieved by an Indian institution in the history of the QS rankings.

The rankings, released on June 18, 2026, feature 52 Indian institutions, highlighting the growing global recognition of India’s universities and research ecosystem. IIT Bombay retained its position among the country’s top institutions at 134th globally, while IIT Madras registered one of the most notable improvements, climbing ten places to reach the 170th rank.

What Helped IIT Delhi Improve?

According to IIT Delhi, the improvement in ranking was driven by significant gains across several key performance indicators used by QS. One of the most important contributors was the Employer Reputation indicator, where the institute climbed 11 positions to secure the 39th rank globally. This metric reflects how employers perceive graduates from different institutions and is considered a strong measure of the quality and employability of students.

Another major achievement came in the Employment Outcomes category, where IIT Delhi improved by an impressive 60 places. This indicator evaluates how effectively institutions prepare students for successful careers and leadership roles in industry, academia, and public service.

The institute also witnessed a substantial rise in Citations per Faculty, improving by 26 positions. This parameter measures the quality and impact of research publications produced by faculty members. The improvement reflects IIT Delhi’s growing contribution to global research and innovation.

A Remarkable Four-Year Journey

The latest ranking represents a remarkable turnaround for IIT Delhi. Over the last four years, the institute has improved its global standing by 79 positions, moving from 197th place in the QS World University Rankings 2024 to 118th in the 2027 edition.

Experts attribute this growth to a combination of curriculum reforms, investments in research infrastructure, stronger industry collaborations, and increasing international engagement. The institute has also focused on attracting global talent and strengthening partnerships with leading universities worldwide.

Commenting on the achievement, Prof. Somnath Baidya Roy, Dean (Planning) and Head of the Ranking Cell at IIT Delhi, said the institution remains committed to providing world-class yet affordable technological education. He emphasized that recent academic reforms, infrastructure development, and international collaborations are expected to further strengthen IIT Delhi’s position in the coming years.

Strong Performance Across Disciplines

The latest achievement comes on the back of IIT Delhi’s impressive performance in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026. Several disciplines offered by the institute, including Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, and Civil Engineering, were ranked among the world’s top 50 subjects.

In the broader Engineering and Technology category, IIT Delhi secured the 36th position globally, retaining its status as India’s highest-ranked institution in the field.

India’s Growing Presence in Global Rankings

This year’s rankings also highlight the increasing global visibility of Indian higher education institutions. Of the 52 Indian universities featured, 33 are public institutions, while 19 are private or private not-for-profit universities.

The rankings include 13 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), with eight of them featuring among the world’s top-ranked engineering institutions. The performance reflects India’s growing investments in higher education, research, innovation, and international collaboration.

Despite these challenges, India’s overall representation in the rankings continues to grow. The strong performance of institutions such as IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, and IIT Madras reflects the country’s ambition to become a global hub for higher education, research, and innovation.

As India seeks to position itself as a leading knowledge economy, the latest QS rankings provide encouraging evidence that its premier institutions are steadily gaining international recognition and influence.
